Well, I'd think it was over the top and downright insane, except that other people seem to be reporting bad experiences with the LJAT as well. I had a friend who was on it once, and I think he left due to issues with them, but went back. But being that this person was an emergency responder in RL, maybe his definition of emergency was somewhat divergent than the typical "USER X SED BAD THNGS ABT ME WAH" complaint they usually get. I mean seriously - for every real issue there are going to be ten thousand wah-babies out there starting flamewars and complaining when someone flames back. After a while, maybe it's not so easy sorting them out. I couldn't do it. And I've had suicide line training. I don't think I could take on the responsibility of determining what was real and what was wank, being that all I'd ever have to go on is what people said. I'm not there - how could I know? You might be delusional. They might be delusional. It's not like there aren't a lot of those folks about, either. How can we know?

Ask your friend if he ever saw anyone give the fatuous response "we can't do anything unless they actually jump off the ledge" when a potential suicide attempt was reported by a third party who didn't know the address of the LJ Friend who was threatening to do such.

I did.

I have heard of them sending squads out, though. But what can they do if they don't have the address and can't get the address? What can they do from a distance? They can contact the people - I know they do that. But other than that, what can they do? If I call 911 right now and tell them I have a friend in another city who is threatening suicide but I don't know the address, what would they be able to do?

I've posted my emergency contact information for the LJ abuse team to get if they need to...it probably needs updating right now, as a matter of fact. So if I ever threatened it, they would have the tools they needed to do something, if you or someone else reported me. But that's voluntary. Not everyone does that. What can they do if someone doesn't?

It wasn't that they didn't have any contact information, it was that they chose not to use it.

No personal disrespect intended, but I think that anyone who relies on the LJ Abuse Team having emergency access to contact information is in for a dangerous surprise.

In fact, quite bluntly, regardless of the satire at the top, I think some people who rely on their emergency info being available to LJ Abuse are going to wind up dead, in no small part due to LJ Abuse Team malfeasance.

Well, frankly, if I'm ever going to really kill myself, I doubt I'd tell anyone first anyway. I'd take a page from the men for this - men tend to do it without saying anything first. And if it was just a "stop me before I do this" thing, I'd wait to hear from all my friends-and-relations before I did anything, half-hoping they'd talk me out of it. (And don't say I'm insensitive or I don't understand...I've been there more times than you know.) So it's not really relevant to me anyway - I did it because one time when they did stop a suicide (which they did used to do, whatever they do now), my friend posted to everyone to please put their contact information there. So I did it. And you never know - it might be useful. Maybe someday Kieran will find me sick and post in my journal to come help me. And I do have faith that someone would come, because they've been there before. But they aren't my last line of defense, by any means.

My impression is that most of the people who post their personal information in a private entry so that LJ Abuse can use the Viewall command to see it in an emergency are doing so so that info can be relayed in the event that they're sufficiently injured or ill so as to be unable to communicate with paramedics or e.r. staff; some people also list information which might be useful in the event of their disappearance due to criminal action.

These are the people who I think are not going to be helped despite their expectations and wishes. My own experience with LJ Abuse is that they don't really give a damn about users, period, and if somebody should really be suffering abuse or be in physical jeopardy they don't consider it their problem, no matter what anybody else thinks they should be doing or what their responsibilities are.
